The 1975 - UGH!
Our decision to use this song was based on the ideas and theme for the visuals we wanted to do, and we picked a song which fit our plan. We wanted a groovy song, with a band. We wanted to do interesting visual effects and especially include interesting hues and coloured stage lighting. Additionally, one of the most important of our preferences is to have a band playing in the song. This song is easy to learn, play and sing, with the additional benefit of fitting all our other criteria and sounding great. It is a song that all of our group enjoys listening to, and as a result, coming up with initial ideas and inspiration was an easy task.
We are going to create a very staged, choreographed music video. Rather than having close, jaunted, organic shots, we are going to draw inspiration from Wes Anderson. Long/medium distance shots, symmetry. We are going to combine this with a neo-disco setting, with soft blue and pink coloured lights
The song has a very obvious theme, dealing with drug addiction. We want to reflect this in our video, but not in an obvious, ham-fisted manner. We want to be more subtle. To achieve this, we have decided to combine our neo-disco setting with a medical/body process theme. Including such props as a model skeleton and a model of the human anatomy, with streaks of glow-in-the-dark paint.
We want to split the video into shots of the band playing with coloured stage lighting, and level, calculated camera angles. Juxtapose this with shots of the main character singing and dancing, interacting with the props, which will be mostly medical imagery. Combine this with various images of interesting props and locations. For example, a lava lamp/the tail lights of a car. However we want to focus on the shots inside the studio.
THE PITCH
As we have came up with the idea it is essential to know that our idea can be conveyed and received well by a class of unbiased individuals. This would enable us to know that our idea was clear and had direction, rather than just an ensemble of different elements with no context.Overall the pitch was successful and gave us confidence with the project, as the class thought it was interesting and engaging. As well as challenging some of our ideas and how they would fundamentally work, in addition to asking why we have avoided things like a main narrative.
What feedback were you given?
Jasper Williams -"I like the concept of the music video, it has a lot of interesting aspects that will be interesting to watch, as it is all about visuals. Although are you certain that a narrative isn't needed and that the visuals will not confuse the audience and the authenticity of the product will be lost in transit?"
Abbey Hunter - "It is great how there is originality to the video, it isn't just a band playing there is clear experimentation - like with the science experiments and different camera angles like the drone shots. Do you think that you minimal colour theme can carry the same effect as lots of vibrance, that could give a more amplified feel?"
Review and changes
Although it is imperative to take on feedback and work from it we are still strong with the idea in place. Some of the questions raised above did make us think about how we convey the concept but didn't end up altering our plans. For instance the minimal colour is to keep the video fresh and professional, we aren't trying to make a party or pop video with mass colour.
